New Member Orientation Process

Visit WIKI

  • Point out the Board Members
    • Emphasize that if they have problems or concerns, these are the people to work with.
  • Point out the Area Leads
    • Emphasize that they should know the area leads of the areas they’re working in.
  • Walk through the Membership Wiki
    • Start with the fact that we’re, and now they are, an extended member of the BDC.
    • Point out that there are ‘Club Rules’ and there are ‘BDC Rules’.
      • Mention that rent is $3500/month for the space, including free internet and utilities, and maintaining compliance is crucial to keeping the space.
    • BDC Rules that members must follow:
      • No storage of flammable materials outside of the firebox.
      • No pouring of chemicals down the drain.
      • No painting or heavy VOC generation outside of the spray booth.
      • No smoking, alcohol consumption, or vaping inside the building.
      • No sleeping overnight in the facility.
      • Respect for the common areas.
    • Quickly read through the Wiki page, stopping for questions and discussion as needed.

Walk Members Through the Space

  • Point out important areas and equipment:
    • Light switches for the Wood Lab, Metal Lab, and Meeting Table.
    • The ‘Whoos It, Use It, Lose It’ shelf.
    • The free wood and scrap wood bins in the Wood Lab.
    • The switch for the exhaust systems in the Wood Lab.
    • The bin for sawdust in the Wood Lab.
    • The three pieces of equipment that require training before use:
      • Laser Cutter
      • Plasma CNC Cutter
      • CNC Wood Cutter
    • The cleaning locker with brooms and garbage bags.
    • The trash can for food, emphasizing that only food can go into this bin.

Walk Members Outside of the Space

  • The FOB can open the alternative door by the dock.
  • Restroom access:
    • Emphasize that if they use the restroom, they must take their FOB or they may be locked out.
  • How to use the dock door with an RFID card.
  • Location of the Dumpster (Code: 0100).
  • Location of restrooms.
  • Location of conference rooms and how members can schedule meetings.
  • History Poster about the facility’s past as a manufacturing location (for fun!).

After the Meeting

  • Dismiss members if they don’t need a FOB or tote.
  • Issue FOBs and Totes as needed.
    • Contact Jeff/Nathan if unsure whether someone should receive a FOB.
  • Unprop the door.
  • Log administration details:
